Biography
Alan Pearson has a professional background in nursing, having trained in the UK in the 1960s. He is currently Professor of Evidence Based Health Care and Executive Director of the Joanna Briggs Institute at the University of Adelaide, Australia. Alan has extensive experience in clinical practice in the UK, the USA, Papua New Guinea and Australia. He was appointed as Foundation Dean and Professor of Nursing at Australia’s first university nursing school in 1986 and has subsequently held professorial chairs at the University of New England and La Trobe University. He holds honorary professorial positions at Fudan University, PRC and Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen.
He is Expert Adviser to the World Health Organisation’s World Alliance on Patient Safety; a Fellow of the Royal College of Nursing (UK); and a Fellow of the Australian Association of Gerontology.
Professor Pearson is actively involved in advancing evidence based healthcare in the Peoples Republic of China, Japan, Taiwan, Korea, Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, Myanmar (Burma), Spain, Portugal, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Botswana, the USA, Brazil, Cameroon, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Nigeria, Canada, Belgium, Finland, Romania and Australasia and has published over 50 books, monographs and reports; over 30 book chapters; and over 150 journal articles.
He was appointed as a Member of the Order of Australia on Australia Day, 2010, for his services as an educator and as a leader in evidence based health care and clinical practice improvement. He was appointed to the ten-member Research Committee of the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI) in 2010.
