Biography
Carl May is a social scientist with wide experience of the health professions. He joined the University of Southampton in October 2010 as Pr0fessor of Healthcare Innovation and Research Dean for Health Sciences, after spending ten years as Professor of Medical Sociology at the University of Newcastle. His personal programme of research brings together the social and clinical sciences to conduct basic, applied and policy research focusing on how new knowledge, techniques, and technologies are made workable and integrated into formal and informal healthcare settings. This work includes more than 60 studies valued in excess of £20 million.
Carl’s research began with a doctorate in nurse-patient inter action in terminal care. Subsequently he has researched in nursing, genetic counselling, medicine, and on innovative health technologies and complex interventions in health care. His recent work looks at the transfer of work from hospital to home, between formal healthcare and informal self-care. The combination of these areas of work has led to a focus on understanding the ways that advances in clinical care add new burdens of work to patients and carers, and a call for the development of techniques for Minimally Disruptive Healthcare.
