Biography
Catherine Pope is Professor of Medical Sociology in the Faculty of Health Sciences and Deputy Director of the Web Science Doctoral Training Centre. Her current research focuses on digital and web technologies and the sociology of professional practice. She has participated in various national evaluations of health service reorganisation and ethnographies of surgery, anaesthetics and emergency care. Catherine has pioneered and developed research methods, notably qualitative methods for health research and evidence synthesis. She was co-editor, with Graham Crow, of Sociology (2006-8) and, with Nicholas Mays, of the popular introductory text, Qualitative Research in Health Care (3rd edition 2006, Blackwells/BMJ Books) which has been translated into Japanese and Portuguese. She has recently written (with Nicholas Mays and Jennie Popay) Synthesizing qualitative and quantitative health evidence (2008, Open University Press).
