The Division of Social Statistics and Demography is a world-leading training environment for postgraduate researchers (PGR) working towards a PhD. Our department is research active with distinguished academic staff involved in a wide range of national and international research projects, collaborative networks and research centres. The department is supported by UK, EU and international government and charitable funding agencies on a wide range of social statistics and demographic research. Our postgraduates particularly benefit from the departments’ strength in research and training in quantitative methods, measurement and methodology.
We welcome applications to the Social Statistics and Demography postgraduate research programme from students or professionals with a relevant Masters degree. Applications can be made throughout the year and if successful, PGR students can start the programme at any time.
Before submitting your application form for a PhD, we strongly recommend that you contact a member of our staff whose research has similarities with your own interests. He or she will be able to assist you by discussing your proposed research ideas in the context of our training programme. You will find details of all the academics in the department who may be able to supervise your research on the staff profile pages. You will also find details of the main research themes and sub-groups on the departmental research pages.
With respect to funding, please note that the department does not provide funding for postgraduate researchers. However, we have a very strong track record in supporting potential students in making applications for scholarships and governmental funding.
