Mrs Gayathri Abeywickrama Masters (Honours in Demography)
Postgraduate research student
Mrs Gayathri Abeywickrama is a Postgraduate Researcher within Social Statistics & Demography division at the University of Southampton.
She obtained her Bachelor’s Degree (specialized in Demography) in year 2011 and later she obtained her Masters Degree in Demography from the University of Colombo in 2016. She then joined as a lecture at the Department of Demography, University of Colombo, where she has been involved in teaching various Demography courses. She has also been involved in a number of research projects on reproductive health needs of vulnerable women in Sri Lanka, urbanization, population-ageing etc., conducted by the FPA (Family Planning Association of Sri Lanka) and other NGO’s. Inspired by her academic calibre, she was able to follow CTHE (Certificate in Teaching Higher Education) and qualified for the SEDA award. Gayathri has presented at several national and international seminars and conferences including 10th UNESCO Youth Forum held in Chengdu, China in 2016, where she proposed suggestions on youth empowerment in Asia. She authored and co-authored papers on peer-reviewed journals including journal of Population Association in Sri Lanka. Her recent publication was on fertility decision making of women in slums and shanties in Colombo district, Sri Lanka.
