About the project

Are you excited about the future of high-energy laser systems? Cryogenically cooled lasers are paving the way for next-gen high-power applications. We’re looking for a passionate PhD student to help us develop cutting-edge, compact “turn-key” solid-state lasers that operate in the visible and UV wavelength bands.

Why this matters

Cryogenic lasers exploit extreme cooling to access exceptional materials’ properties that are not available to lasers that operate around room-temperature. By advancing this technology, you’ll be contributing to breakthroughs in advancing ‘green’ manufacturing applications.

What you’ll do
  • innovate: develop state-of-the-art cryogenic laser systems
  • experiment: work hands-on with creating and characterising novel laser systems
  • collaborate: engage in interdisciplinary research and work with top-tier partners
  • explore: discover new approaches to enhance laser performance and explore new operating regimes.
What we’re looking for

We’re seeking a keen and pragmatic student who is eager to push the boundaries of laser technology. Your role will involve practical development and innovation to exploit the unique properties of cryogenic lasers.

Why join us?
  • cutting-edge facilities: access to world-class resources and cleanroom facilities
  • interdisciplinary research: collaborate with experts within the university and beyond. Travel and present your work at major international conferences
  • national collaboration: work with the UK national laser facility and other external partners

If you’re ready to take on this exciting challenge and be part of a team that’s shaping the future of laser technology, we want to hear from you!
