English language support before you start your degree

English language requirements

If English is not your first language, you will need to show that you can speak, write and understand English well enough to benefit from your university studies.

You will need to provide evidence that you have:

• reached a satisfactory standard in an approved test in English, or

• a first degree from a university based in the UK that has been taught and assessed in English, or

• been taught and assessed in English and come from a country which is on the list of those exempt from testing

English language requirements vary for different degree courses. Check the details of the courses you are interested in for specific requirements. If you are still unsure, you can visit the country pages for more information or contact the International Office .

English language support during your degree

Term-time English courses

We also run an English for Academic Purposes support programme during term time, so you can improve your English while you study for your degree. The courses are free to international students, and cover topics such as

• presentation skills

• everyday English

• academic writing skills

Other English language resources

Other English language resources and services include:

• an online self-study toolkit available on Blackboard, one of the University’s virtual learning environments

• one-to-one support from a language tutor

• English classes for students and their partners at the Students' Union

English language support for visiting students

If you are visiting the University on an Erasmus exchange or other visiting programme, you can take English language degree unit courses. You can study these either as main or alternative subjects in your academic programme.
