Start of new “Greenspace” recycling scheme

You may have read in the Green e-Bulletin that we are introducing a new recycling scheme to the University. This will allow us to recycle more and so send less to landfill with the associated cost savings and environmental benefits.

The roll out will be in two phases. For Phase 1 the external wheelie bins in the Recycling Compounds around campuses are being changed now:

Current scheme New scheme
Blue wheelie bin

General waste

Purple wheelie bin

General waste (food, crisp packets, contaminated packaging)

Red wheelie bin

Paper/cardboard

Green wheelie bin (“Greenspace”)

Paper (newspapers, magazines and coloured, shredded & wrapping paper)

Cardboard

Plastics (cups, bottles, sandwich boxes, milk cartons, plastic packaging)

Cans (drink & food cans, aluminium trays & foil)

Glass

Purple wheelie bin

Glass

As for Greenstar wheelie bin

So, if you do take different waste streams to the recycling compounds, please use the new wheelie bins to recycle your waste.

For Phase 2, we will be making changes to the internal recycling bin system to reflect the new opportunity to recycle more. This change will happen over a week, once all the external bins have been swapped over. We will inform staff and students of this change in advance.

You can either contact Ed Faherty, Ian Russell or e-mail the central waste helpline ([email protected]), if you have any questions about this scheme. You can also find out how to dispose of different types of waste by going to: http://www.estates.soton.ac.uk/waste.htm.

Of course, while it is good to recycle, it is much better not to produce the waste in the first place. Simple measures, such as photocopying double sided, thinking about whether you need to print out e-mails or printing in draft mode, which saves ink, will make a difference.

I hope you will all support this scheme and help us to help the environment.
