Community standards for internal communication channels

The use of a comments facility in our internal communication channels e.g. (SUSSED) is a tool to enable discussion and community building through the sharing of ideas, opinions and stories. This serves to enhance the role of these channels in increasing staff and student engagement and the pride our staff and students have in the University.

We follow the principle that all content should be open to comments and discussion, except in cases where there is concern around information about individual members of our community or about the University’s reputation overall. This is most likely where a channel is externally visible e.g. the SUSSED news site.

To protect members of our community, individuals or organisations we have a relationship with and/or the reputation of our University, comments are moderated to ensure they comply with our community standards which are as follows:

  1. Be respectful

Comments should be focused around the topic of the post and should not contain a personal attack on another individual.

  1. Be tolerant

Comments will not be published that are deemed to be prejudicial or pejorative to an individual’s race, colour, religion, gender, sexual orientation or to any physical or mental illness or disability.

  1. Be legal

Comments that are defamatory will not be published i.e. a comment that is capable of damaging the reputation of a person or organisation.

  1. Be civil

Comments that contain swearing or that are likely to cause offense or be seen as threatening will not be published.

  1. Be relevant

We believe that while debate must be open and free, discussion on particular content should be kept relevant to the subject matter. Comments which represent commercial advertising will not be published.

This principles will be used in line with University policies around equality and diversity.
