The Graham Fitkin Group perform at Turner Sims this Thursday 25 February at 8pm‚ and Turner Sims are giving away five pairs of free tickets to University of Southampton staff!
This stunning nine–piece band features some of the best musicians working in the UK today‚ exploring new and rhythmically intricate music with pulse‚ energy and minimalism.
Fresh from winning his 2009 British Composer Award‚ Graham and his virtuoso band perform no-nonsense music‚ with punchy rhythms‚ tight grooves and phenomenal playing‚ featuring saxes‚ trumpet‚ percussion‚ piano‚ harps‚ guitar and bass. All the music has been composed by Graham over the past 12 months and treads the line between formal ‘serious’ concert music genres and more informal music. Dealing with pulse, rhythm and using relentless stamina, Graham says there are long periods of dynamic unisons breaking into rhythmic complexity, tight grooves crashing into random pulses. We will be taking rhythm apart and reassembling it in a new, vibrant way.
Fitkin’s music has mass appeal, with stylistic influences from jazz to minimalism, and early to folk. This is a great evening of music which will leave you in high spirits!
