The 2010 waste audit showed that about 40 per cent of the materials in the general waste bins around the University are easily recyclable. In an effort to encourage more recycling‚ Estates and Facilities are reducing the frequency that they empty personal waste bins to once a week‚ starting this week (week commencing 2 August).
This change has the full support of the University’s Environment Committee. Dr Neil Smith‚ Environment Manager‚ says: “We’re now recycling about 40 per cent of our waste, but it’s clear from our audit we can do a lot better. Recycling more is not only better for the environment, it’s also cheaper than sending our waste to landfill. While it’s good to recycle it’s even better not to produce the waste in the first place. So, help to reduce the amount of waste we produces by taking simple measures, such as not printing out e-mails or other documents and if you do, print double sided”.
More about this change:
• This change will only apply to bins located in offices. Bins located in kitchens‚ communal areas‚ lecture theatres etc. will not be affected. (Therefore, you are advised to dispose of all your non recyclable waste in the bins located in your nearest kitchen, as these will be emptied daily).
• Most recyclable materials such as paper, cans, foil and plastics can be placed in the Paper or Mixed Recycling bins which are located in all of our buildings. A list of items that can be recycled via these bins is shown on posters placed adjacent to the bins.
