Students have the opportunity to compete to redesign a learning space

Students have been given the opportunity to enter a competition to redesign a room in the Hartley Library with a £100,000 budget which could be spent on technology‚ furnishings or other items needed to bring their design to life. It really is a blank canvas.

Students can enter the competition in teams or individually. Initially they will be asked to submit a design concept (200 words) and then work with experts in the University to build a final design submission before Christmas.

The winning design will then be built by the University. The winning team or student will win £1,500 and gain skills and experiences that will help to prepare them for the workplace. The University will also be installing a haptic touch screen wall in the room, which may inspire students with a passion for technology to get involved.

This year’s competition builds on the success of the same initiative in 2009/10. Opened earlier this month, last year’s winning design provides a comfortable and welcoming new space for discussion and study.  It consists of group and individual study cubicles; a presentation area with interactive touch-screen technology, and an exhibition area to promote the sharing and communication of knowledge and ideas. Its designers included students of engineering, web science, social archaeology and international relations.
