Celebrate the Centenary of International Women’s Day at the Students’ Union's Ladies Night Event

To celebrate the Centenary of International Women’s Day‚ the Students’ Union will be running a Ladies Night Event on the evening of Monday 7 March from 7pm to 10.30pm. They are hoping University students‚ University staff as well as members of the local community will attend‚ including local residents‚  school leavers‚ teachers and parents from local schools.

Preceding the main event there will be a showing of the film The Colour Purple in the Union Cinema at 5pm.

The Students’ Union will be transformed into a vibrant exhibition and market place with specially commissioned artwork from Winchester School of Art and photography from the archives at the Hartley Library. The art and photography will specifically relate to the women’s movement in and around Southampton and the University.

Alongside the exhibition there will be stands where those attending will have the opportunity to see, do and buy things, there will also be inspirational people to listen to and meet. There will be a variety of stands selling jewellery, cards, art, pants and Asian inspired items. There will also be things to try, such as make-up and beauty products, personal colour and style mapping and hair demonstrations.

Three inspirational women will speak in The Bridge Café-Bar, where a selection of food and drink will be available from 7pm. A variety of performances will also take place.

The idea of the event is to encourage women to get together in an open, educational, exciting and ultimately inspiring environment. The event will be free to attend for all stall holders and attendees, but we will have a charity collection for all to contribute to during the evening.

Organiser of the event, Emily Rees, Vice-President Welfare and Societies says:

“Through this event, I want to create a feeling of pride at what women have and can achieve. I want all attendees (male or female) to leave with a sense that they are part of something bigger in the wider Southampton community.

More importantly, I want to see our fantastic Students’ Union facilities full of women of different ages, cultures and backgrounds celebrating and having fun. Ultimately, I want women to leave with a smile and feel inspired to continue to do great things themselves.”
