Professor David Williams has announced his decision to retire from the University of Southampton; his last day will be 12 April 2011.
Professor Williams was appointed to the position of Dean of Medicine, Health and Life Sciences at the University in 2004 having previously been Vice Principal at Queen Mary, University of London. Following the transition to the new organisational structure, David was appointed Vice-Provost with specific responsibilities to work with the Provost in developing the new Faculties.
Vice-Chancellor, Professor Don Nutbeam, says: “David has made a significant contribution to the University in his seven years at Southampton. I am personally grateful for the support he has offered throughout my time at the University, and the important contribution he has made during his time as Dean and Vice-Provost.
“I’m sure that many in the University community who have worked with David will join me in wishing him all the best in his future endeavours. I am pleased that David will continue to have a relationship with the University as an Emeritus Professor.”
Commenting on his time at Southampton and his future plans, David says: “It has been a great privilege to be part of the senior leadership team of a Faculty and University of such global standing, and I am proud of the contributions that we have made together. I will miss the many hard working and highly capable colleagues I have had the opportunity to work with during my time at Southampton and I wish the University every success in the years to come.
“During the past two years I have been leading an international research initiative to address global oral health inequalities. I will now be in a position to devote to this initiative the time and energy that it needs”.
