Professor Paul Townsend's inaugural lecture – 16 March 2011

Paul Townsend‚ Professor of Molecular Cell Biology and Deputy Director of Cancer Sciences in the School of Medicine will present his inaugural lecture on 16 March‚ entitled ‘Cancer to cardioprotection: Hearts and flowers‚ death and stats’.

Professor Townsend’s laboratory focuses on cell stress and survival mechanisms where Paul is an expert in cardioprotection and apoptosis regulation. The lab’s research uses two important health models: cardiac myocytes undergoing oxygen deprivation and cancers (both solid cancers, eg, breast and colon cancer, and blood-borne cancers, eg, leukaemia and lymphoma).

This inaugural lecture will present some key and surprising findings from the lab over the last few years which may lead to the development of new molecular therapies for chronic disease. An example of this is a chemical found in Chinese green tea, which the lab and research colleagues at UCL have shown to reduce the amount of cell death which can ultimately lead to organ failure.

The lecture takes place at 5pm, with refreshments served from 4.30pm.

All are welcome and there’s no need to book a place.

It will take place in Lecture Theatre 2, Level B, South Academic Block, Southampton General Hospital, SO16 6YD.
