Guidance for staff and students affected by the recent natural disaster in Japan

The University recognises that some of our staff or students may be personally affected by the recent natural disaster which has occurred in Japan.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office currently advises against all non essential travel to Japan. If you are a Japanese national concerned about family and friends you should call The Japanese Embassy on +44 (0)20 7465 6500. If you are concerned about a British National in Japan call the Foreign Office Helpline on +44 (0)20 7008 0000.

If you have been affected by the events in Japan‚ or if you are concerned about your own circumstances and need practical advice regarding travel or making international calls please contact the Student Services Centre. You can either come directly into the SSC on Highfield campus, call us on 023 8059 9599 or email us at [email protected]. The team will be able to give you more information about individual or group support sessions being offered by the Counselling Service to affected staff and students.

You should continue to check the Foreign and Commonwealth Office for further updates, please visit http://www.fco.gov.uk/en/

The Red Cross has launched a special family links website to help people seeking to re-establish contact with family members and friends. Details can be found on their website at http://www.redcross.org.uk/What-we-do/Finding-missing-family/Contacting-family-after-the-Japan-earthquake-and-tsunami.

The Red Cross are also looking for volunteers or fundraisers to help with their Japan Tsunami Appeal. If you want to offer your help you can find out more at http://www.redcross.org.uk/

If you find yourself in financial hardship as a direct result of the Tsunami, for instance if your sponsor is unable to continue your sponsorship, or you find yourself unable to pay for an essential return to Japan once it is safe to do so, please contact the Student Services Centre on 02380 599599 who can advise on how you may be able to access emergency funding.
