Mayor of Southampton‚ Cllr Terry Matthews‚ will visit the University’s Avenue Campus on Wednesday 22nd June for a languages outreach event for year 8 pupils from Southampton and neighbouring counties.
Approximately 150 pupils will take part in the Able Linguist Day‚ which will involve a Fair–Trade themed project activity in French‚ German or Spanish in the morning‚ led by the University’s languages PGCE students. In the afternoon‚ pupils will take part in language taster sessions‚ having a go at languages such as Japanese and Norwegian with Modern Languages staff‚ before ending the day with a talk about how languages can be used in the workplace. The Mayor will see an exhibition of the pupils’ Fair Trade work and will also meet with staff from the Faculty of Humanities.
This event is supported by the national Routes into Languages initiative, which encourages young people to continue studying languages.
