Ken Macdonald QC has returned to private practice at Matrix Chambers after five years as Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP)‚ the first leading defence lawyer to have been appointed to that post. As DPP, he established the Counter Terrorism Division, the Organised Crime Division, the Special Crime Division and the Fraud Prosecution Service. He played a major role across Whitehall in the development of criminal justice policy, especially in relation to international treaties and jurisdiction, mutual legal assistance, extradition, terrorism, security, and grave cross border crime.
Ken Macdonald’s practice ranges from business and corporate crime and associated extraditions, to financial regulation, market abuse, terrorism, human rights and media law. His clients have included overseas governments, international media organisations, prominent British arms companies, major foreign defence corporations and many private individuals. He recently oversaw a government Review of Counter-Terrorism and Security Powers.
In 2007, he was knighted for services to the law. He is a Visiting Professor of Law at the London School of Economics and a member of the Advisory Board of the Centre for Criminology at the University of Oxford, and he writes regularly for The Times on law, security and politics.
