Introduction of food collection scheme

A food waste collection service will start on 1st August 2011 and the collection arrangements will consist of:

Food – A food caddy will be placed on the counter in each kitchen/rest room. This will contain a biodegradable bag and will be emptied on a daily basis. Please only put food waste and compostable materials in the caddy. An information poster will be available to explain what can be put in the caddy.

Landfill – The general bin (for waste that will be taken to a landfill site) (black bin liner) will remain in the kitchen BUT will only be emptied once a week. Nothing needs to go in this bin. ALL food packaging can be recycled – you should separate any food waste and put it in the caddy before placing the packaging in the mixed recycling bin.

Recycling – The mixed recycling bin (clear bag) will continue to be emptied on a weekly schedule. All of the following can be recycled:

Paper
Cardboard
All plastics (including sandwich boxes made from plastic and cardboard; yogurt pots, plastic boxes etc)
Cans
Plastic bottles (please rinse out and place caps separately in the same bin)

Please take any glass bottles to the green Euro bins (labelled Green Space) in the bin compounds. You can find the location of your nearest compound by going to: http://data.southampton.ac.uk/generic-products-and-services/GeneralWasteDisposal.html

You can find out how to recycle even more items by going to: http://southampton.likn.co/estates/services/wasterecycling/waste_man.html

Thank you for your support and please contact Mike Travers (24033; [email protected]) or Dr Neil Smith (26679; [email protected]) if you have any questions or experience any problems with this system.
