National Student Survey (NSS) results reveal 85 per cent satisfaction rating

Today (17 August 2011) the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) published the results of the The National Student Survey (NSS) 2011. The results show that 85 per cent of our final year students are satisfied with their experience at the University.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Don Nutbeam comments:

“We are pleased that such a high proportion of our students have a positive experience during their time at the University of Southampton – a satisfaction rating of 85 per cent is above the national average. However, we cannot afford to be complacent and will continue to work with our students and staff to improve the quality of the education, support and feedback that we provide.

“This survey shows that further improvement can be made to the way we give feedback to our students about their work, and how we can make better use of comments we receive from them about their experience at the University. In the coming academic year we will be improving our internal student surveys, and making better use of the feedback we receive; and we will be exchanging more and better “real-time” information with students through a variety of channels. We want our students to know that we have listened to their concerns and acted upon them.”

Key facts about the National Student Survey

The seventh National Student Survey (NSS) ran from February to April 2011, and is sponsored by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE).

The annual survey measures the satisfaction levels of current students.

The findings were based on answers from approximately 265,000 final year students studying at 154 universities and 99 further education colleges across the UK. This is a response rate of 65 per cent, which is the highest since the survey was started 7 years ago.

The NSS results and a full list of questions can be found on the Unistats website.

From September 2012 the NSS results will be part of the Key Information Set published by HEFCE.
