Professional Development Unit (PDU) formed to support staff and postgraduate career development

The Professional Development Unit (PDU) was formally established within the Human Resources Department on 1 August 2011 to support the development of our academic and professional services staff and postgraduate students. It brings together the combined expertise of colleagues who were previously based in the Learning and Teaching Enhancement Unit (LATEU)‚ the Staff Development section of the Human Resources Department and the Researcher Development and Graduate Centre.

Anne McConkey‚ HR Assistant Director – Professional Development Unit‚ commented: “The PDU aims to support and facilitate the achievement of individual aspirations and career progression in a way which also contributes significantly towards the success of the University and the attainment of its strategic aims and vision.”

Early in the Autumn term the PDU will publish a brochure containing its portfolio of development opportunities for the 2011/12 academic year. Electronic booking arrangements will be extended to all events in the brochure and individuals wishing to participate in them will be asked to book their places via this system.

The programme offered this year is comprehensive and incorporates many of the views expressed by colleagues during the consultation phase. During the coming year the PDU will be building a more structured approach for collaboration with colleagues across the University to gain a better understanding of the facilitative and developmental needs and how those can be met.’
