Reminder: Honorary degrees/Fellow of the University awards – an invitation to nominate (2012 ceremonies)

The Honorary Degree Advisory Group will meet in October to consider proposals for the conferment of Honorary Degrees in 2012 and to consider nominations for the award of Fellow of the University.

You are invited to submit nominations by Friday‚ 16 September 2011 using a pro forma available from the Honorary Degree Advisory Group Secretary‚ Gillian James: [email protected]. Proposals received after this date will not be admitted. Applications will then be sent to the appropriate Faculty for endorsement.

You should feel free to seek views about possible nominations from your colleagues. However‚ please ensure that complete confidentiality is observed: in no circumstances should a person nominated be informed that their name has been put forward.

It may also help you in formulating proposals to know that, when making recommendations to Senate and Council, the key criteria normally taken into account for Honorary degrees are:

Recognition of an individual’s intellectual, creative and/or academic achievement.

The recognition will be evidenced by international, or at the least national, distinction in the nominee’s field.

Evidence of a direct link to the University of Southampton or to the City.

The new award of Fellow of the University is intended to reward those who have an established connection with the University. Potential Fellows of the University of Southampton will:

Support the interests and welfare of the University of Southampton or of a particular part of the University’s activities

Foster the links between the University and other institutions within and without the United Kingdom.
