3rd/4th September Personal Filestore downtime and quotas

All academic staff‚ Professional Services staff embedded in faculties and students will be affected by a shut–down of personal filestore (‘My Documents’) overnight from 10pm on Saturday 3 September to midday on Sunday 4 September.

This work is vital to ensure that our file storage provision supports the on–going needs of the University and it follows the first stage of work carried out by iSolutions on 19 August.

During the shut-down you will still be able to:

• Save to the J:(resource) shared or research folders

• Use email and web applications

• Use a laptop PC offline using a cached copy of My Docs – the laptop will synchronise when filestore is up and running again

Unfortunately you will not be able to:

• Save any data or files to My Documents/My desktop (either manually or through automated processes)

• Use the SSH Gateway service. This will also affect log on to UNIX and Iridis systems, and prevent modifications to content on personal web pages (www.personal.soton.ac.uk/username)

You may find that your Windows desktop will be unusable during this work.

To support the on-going best use of the personal file storage area, from Friday 2 September iSolutions will be allocating everyone (including all Professional Services staff) a set amount of space in personal filestore (initially 50GB). These quotas will also ensure that the system is not overwhelmed by new data in the run up to the weekend shut down.

We will be contacting directly individuals who have been identified as big users of personal filestore to provide them with information about the impact on them of these quotas and the actions they need to take. For all other users, information will be available in the next few weeks via the iSolutions web-pages about how to manage your data so that you do not exceed your personal allocation.

iSolutions apologises for any inconvenience caused by this vital work.
