Major disability sport conference launched

With less than one year to go until the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games‚ the University of Southampton in collaboration with local partners has announced an exciting and informative conference on access to disability sport.

The aim of the conference‚ which takes place on Tuesday 13 September 2011‚ is to ensure that people make the most of the London 2012 Paralympic Games‚ as well as the legacy that will follow and are prepared for the increased interest in disability sports.

Keynote speakers include Chis Holmes MBE, Director of Paralympic Integration for the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG), Paralympic gold-medal swimmer Peter Hull MBE and Geoff Holt MBE, Disability Sports Ambassador and former Chairman and Trustee of RYA Sailability.

There will also be a series of workshops, based on elite and recreational standard participation and opportunities, facilitated by experts in their fields focusing on: ‘Breaking Down Barriers’, ‘Facilities and Equipment’ and ‘Making the Most of London 2012’. Another conference highlight will be coaching demonstrations and workshops delivered by recreational and elite disability sports coaches.

Barry Kitcher, Hampshire 2012 Coordinator, says: “We believe that this will be an exciting, and informative conference, enabling delegates to take with them tangible solutions that will address some of the issues surrounding accessibility to sport. We know of no other conference addressing these important issues and we have received enthusiastic support from national, regional and local organisations.

“We are hoping to attract an exciting delegate list of athletes, facility managers, sports clubs, schools, county sports partnership officers, national governing body officers and local authority officers.”
