The death was announced on 2 January in Southampton of Professor David Barron, the first Professor of Computation in the University and Foundation Professor of Computer Science. David joined Southampton in 1967 and retired in 2000. During that time, in addition to his distinguished teaching and research, he was also Director of Computing Services in the University, and played a leading role in the establishment of the Department of Electronics and Computer Science in 1986. He served as Head of the Department between 1989 and 1994.
