The Marshall Lecture – The Precariat: The New Dangerous Class, a lecture by Professor Guy Standing – Wednesday 15th February 2012

Guy Standing is Professor of Economic Security at the University of Bath in the UK. In his most recent book‚ The Precariat: The New Dangerous Class (London and New York‚ Bloomsbury Academic‚ 2011)‚ Professor Standing describes an emerging class characterised by insecurity and lack of any occupational identity.

In his classic paper on ‘Citizenship and social class’, the sociologist, T.H. Marshall, presented an account of the development of Britain’s welfare state based around three sets of citizenship rights: civil rights, political rights and social rights.

In this Marshall lecture, Professor Standing argues that policymakers will have to go beyond Marshall’s social rights to make the 21st century the century of economic rights, reducing inequalities by new means, primarily in favour of the precariat.

This lecture will take place on Wednesday 15th February 2012 from 6 – 7.15pm in building 44, room 1041. There will be refreshments from 5.30pm and a drinks reception afterwards. To RSVP, please contact Sarah Dack [email protected] by the 8th February 2012.
