Psychologists have proposed that humans have an “Approximate Number System” (ANS) that has an important role in mathematics learning and performance.
Dr Gilmore will present data from a series of experiments with children and adults that demonstrate the situations in which the ANS is, and is not, related to an individual’s maths performance. Dr Gilmore will show that our understanding of the ANS, and the tasks designed to measure it, are far from complete.
