From 22 February until 11 April the Chaplaincy is running a lent project to collect and give tinned and dried food to the local Basics Bank‚ which provides for those in need in Southampton. As good as our State benefit system is‚ it often cannot respond quickly enough in response to crises. The Basics Bank works with referral agents to provide (often in emergency) for those who fall through the gaps in the benefit net.
The Basics Bank (which distributes from various venues around the city|) works with 300 Referral Agents (including Social workers, Health visitors, Doctors, Benefits officers and Community Workers) who issue vouchers to people who are in genuine need. (The Basics Bank is not a Direct Access Project. It gives food only to clients with a voucher from a referral agent)
All the food is donated by local people: through schools, businesses and churches and during lent this year, the University of Southampton will add its valuable contribution. You are invited to be a part of that: PLEASE BRING TINNED OR DRIED FOOD and put it in one of the bins around the campus. You will find them in the Student Union Shop, the NOC Exhibition Area, Avenue Reception and the University Branch of Barclays Bank as well as in the Chaplaincy at 41 University Road
