Allan Cook CBE‚ Chairman SELEX Galileo Ltd will deliver the 56th R J Mitchell Lecture in the Turner Sims Concert Hall on the University’s Highfield Campus. This year marks 50 years since Dr Barnes-Wallis gave the RAS R J Mitchell lecture entitled ‘The Strength of England’.
Mr Cook will discuss the strong, advanced aerospace manufacturing and engineering industry that continues within the UK. He will also consider how the best skills must be retained through future generations in order to face unprecedented challenges.
The Lecture will be held on Tuesday 6 March 2012 at 7:00pm.

Speaker background:
Allan Cook is a chartered engineer with more than 30 years’ international experience in the automotive, aerospace and defence industries. He is chairman of WS Atkins plc, chairman of SELEX Galileo Ltd and was Chief Executive of Cobham plc until December 2009.
Prior to this he held senior roles at GEC-Marconi, BAE Systems and Hughes Aircraft. He is deputy chairman of Marshall of Cambridge (Holdings) Limited and a member of the operating executive board of J.F. Lehman & Company.
He is also chairman of the Skills & Jobs Retention Group, chairman of UK Trade & Investment’s Advanced Engineering Sector Advisory Board, chairman of Semta (The Sector Skills Council for Science, Engineering and Manufacturing Technologies), past president of the Aerospace and Defence Industries Association of Europe (ASD), past president of the Society of British Aerospace and Defence Companies (SBAC) and director of the Industry Forum.
He was awarded a CBE in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours list in 2008 and is a fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering.
