This month marks the 60th anniversary of the granting of the University’s Royal Charter. Awarded on 29 April 1952‚ in the early days of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign‚ the Charter formally established the University of Southampton.
Yet our heritage dates back much further‚ 150 years in fact‚ to the founding of the Hartley Institution in the city’s Below Bar district in 1862.
A new online website charts Southampton’s remarkable history from its earliest days through to the University as we know it today.
