Inaugural Lecture: “Doing away with Doctors?” Workforce research and the future of nursing – Main Lecture Theatre, Nightingale Building 67 – 29 June 2012, 6pm

Staff and students are welcome to attend Professor Peter Griffiths’ Inaugural Lecture. Peter is Professor of Health Services Research in the Faculty of Health Sciences.

Drawing on his research into the healthcare workforce, Peter’s lecture will explore the future for the nursing profession in a changing health system.  The title, based on a headline from a report in the Guardian Newspaper in 1995 , is an extreme articulation of a widely held belief that nurses can replace doctors in many areas of practice.

Peter will argue that the reading of much current research is informed by ideological beliefs and wishful thinking, which puts the interests of professions before those of patients.  So what is to come: a world without doctors or a world where professional nursing, as we currently know it, becomes a thing of the past?

Refreshments will be served in Room 1003 in the Nightingale Building from 5.30pm.  Drinks will be served in the same room after the lecture.
