Simon Pope: Memory Marathon
10 July – 21 July 2012
John Hansard Gallery is proud to present Memory Marathon by UK artist Simon Pope, a film that celebrates personal memory and international spirit in the London 2012 Olympic Games host city. Memory Marathon is the result of an interactive, participatory event in 2009 that saw Pope walk a carefully planned journey through the five East London boroughs playing host to the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Set along a traditional marathon distance of 26 miles, the film draws on the contributions of more than one hundred local people who are each asked to recall a highlight from Olympic history.
Pope is present at every step of the way, creating a visual journal and unique insight into not only Olympic memories, but also the way an event of this magnitude can change, challenge and celebrate community.
Memory Marathon was conceived and produced by Film and Video Umbrella. Commissioned by the Olympic Delivery Authority and funded by the London Development Agency and Arts Council England. The exhibition takes place as part of RELAY, free contemporary arts events, exhibitions and performances taking place around the south east of England April–August 2012. www.relaysoutheast.org.uk
