The funeral service for Lieutenant Andrew Chesterman will be held today (Tuesday, 4 September) in Bristol Cathedral.
Lieutenant Chesterman, a Southampton graduate, died last month after being shot and injured while leading a vehicle patrol through the Nad’Ali district of central Helmand in Afghanistan.
Lieutenant Chesterman, who studied Mechanical Engineering, was a member of the Thunderer Squadron which is part of the Defence Technical Undergraduate Scheme administered by the Defence Academy of the United Kingdom. After graduation he attended the Britannia Royal Naval College, Dartmouth and then the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. He was commissioned into The Rifles in December 2010 and, after completing the Platoon Commanders’ Battle Course, joined the 3rd Battalion.
Lieutenant Chesterman’s family has requested donations to Help for Heroes rather than flowers. A donation has been made by the University through the Vice-Chancellor’s office.
