Professor David Barron: Memorial Symposium – Thursday 13th September

Professor David Barron

A symposium in memory and celebration of Professor David Barron will be held in the Physics Commonroom (Bdg46) on the afternoon of Thursday 13 September. Professor Barron, Foundation Professor of Computer Science in the University of Southampton and Head of Electronics and Computer Science from 1989 to 1994, was described by Times Higher Education as ‘one of the founding fathers of computer science’. In addition to his pioneering work in laying the foundations of computer science, he also made a fundamental contribution to our understanding of radio waves.

The Memorial Symposium reflects the subject of his Inaugural Lecture at the University – delivered in 1971 and entitled: ‘The Computer, the University and Society’. Contributors, led by Professor Dame Wendy Hall, and including David’s colleagues and close friends, and some of his PhD students, will reflect on these subjects and David’s contribution to the development of his subject. The Symposium begins at 12.30 on Thursday 13 September and runs until 6 pm. Anyone interested in attending should contact Joyce Lewis ([email protected]; ext.25453).
