In keeping with our commitment to improve sustainability on the University’s campuses, we are rolling out a new recycling scheme building-by-building starting this week.
The University the size of a small town, and so it’s not surprising that we produce a lot of waste, but we have set a target to recycle at least 60% of this by July 2013.
Under this new scheme, which has been piloted in two buildings, the vast majority of the University’s waste cane be recycled, so we should be able to greatly reduce the amount we send to landfill. This is good for the environment, and it will save the University money.
What’s happening?
Under the new scheme, you will have just two bins in your kitchen or rest room:
- One for food waste, using the existing food caddies
- One for all other mixed recyclables – that’s all other everyday waste except glass.
What changes will you see?
- Landfill waste bins will be removed from kitchens and rest rooms.
- General waste bins in offices will no longer be emptied. You can either keep your bin to store your recycling in before transferring it to the larger bins, or you can leave it in the kitchen for collection.
- All other materials, including crisp packets and chocolate wrappers, can now be placed in the mixed recycling bins.
Other more specific items, such as glass, toner cartridges, CDs and mobile phones, can also be recycled. See the Estates and Facilities website for details. You can also use the Open Data map to identify your nearest glass recycling location on campus.
Further information, including a question and answer document, will be distributed shortly before the scheme is rolled out in your building.
