The theoretical perspective argues that specific core skills and competencies taught in the training arena can be effectively applied to individuals in crisis, thus altering their behaviour in a positive manner. A history of hostage/crisis negotiation is provided followed by a discussion of the role of the negotiating team within hostage and crisis management. It examines some of the modern maritime trends in piracy, including links to serious organised crime and terrorism and the challenges of maritime criminal investigation. The paper also examines the complexities of providing maritime security to the energy sector including the challenges of initial response, incident management, communications, deployment, family liaison, media and organisational reputation.
