To celebrate the University of Southampton’s memorable double anniversary in 2012, two major events are taking place this month.
In addition to this year being the 60th anniversary of the granting of the Royal Charter that established the University, this month marks 150 years since the opening of the original Hartley Institution, from which the University of Southampton developed.
A new exhibition looking back over those 150 years opens on 15 October, in the Special Collections Gallery on Level 4 of the Hartley Library.
“To Constitute and Found a University . . .” From Hartley Institution to the University of Southampton’s Diamond Jubilee runs until December.

Hartley Institution: 150 years
Anniversary concert
At lunchtime on 15 October, a special free concert at the Turner Sims will be held, starting at 1pm.
All are welcome. No tickets are required.
The Royal Marines Association Concert Band will be our guests at this special event, 150 years to the day since the 1862 Band of the Royal Marines played at the Hartley Institution’s grand opening ceremony.
The 45-strong band will be playing a specially chosen programme of music for the occasion, and for concertgoers arriving early, tea and cake will be served from 12.15pm in the Turner Sims foyer.
The concert ends at 1.50pm.
