Sustainable transport – your options at the University

We’re continually working to improve transport options and facilities for our staff and students in order to make your travel easy and sustainable.

Shortlisted twice for The Times Higher Education Awards, in 2011 and 2012, our Uni-Cycle scheme allows us to reduce our environmental impact in a number of ways. By refurbishing unwanted and donated bikes and putting them back into use, we are increasing the number of staff and students cycling to the University – reducing congestion and improving wellbeing – as well as cleaning up the campus and reducing the amount of waste going to landfill.

As part of the scheme, we run twice-monthly ‘Bike Dr’ sessions in the central red brick area of the Highfield campus, which give members of the University community free bike maintenance. We also hold bike sales at least twice a year, including cheap cycles which have been recovered and recycled from the site, or donations from around Southampton. The dates of upcoming Bike Dr Sessions are as follows:

October 26th
November 16th
November 30th
December 14th

If you’d like to donate your bike or you’d like to know more about the scheme, visit the transport website.

uni-link buses

Our uni-link buses carried a record 4.3 million passengers in 2011, and the service has been growing annually since 2001. This shows that individuals are making more sustainable choices, such as taking the bus rather than driving or taking a taxi. This combined with increased cycling rates is cutting our carbon footprint as a community and helping us move towards a more sustainable future. You can find out more about smarter ways of travelling, including our flexible working policy and video-conferencing services, on the smarter travel page of the transport website.
