HARTLEY Singers & Sinfonia — University of Southampton Music Department

With Cantores Michaelis and guest soloists

PAUL COX  conductor

St Michael’s Church, Southampton and the University of Southampton Music Department mark Remembrance Sunday with a special performance of Franz Joseph Haydn’s Mass in D minor, Hob. XXII:11, Missa in Angustiis (“Mass in Time of Trouble”).  Haydn wrote it in 1798, the year of Admiral Horatio Nelson’s victory against French naval forces in the Battle of the Nile – hence the alternative title “Nelson Mass”.  Nelson himself may have heard the Mass performed when he visited Eisenstadt in 1800.

Paul Cox conducts the University’s HARTLEY Singers and Sinfonia, joined by guest soloists and Cantores Michaelis – the university choral scholars based at St Michael’s.

The programme also includes:

Johann Michael Haydn  Tantum Ergo (Modern Premiere)

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart  Adagio in B-flat Major, K.411

F. J. Haydn  Cantata: Lines from Battle of the Nile
