Humanities and Turner Sims are running a community choir experiment in the weeks leading up to Christmas to which all members of the University community with any interest in singing are welcome to attend.
Harvey Brough is a staggeringly versatile musician: a singer, composer, arranger and animateur who has worked successfully in the classical, jazz and pop fields for 30+ years. You can check out his website at http://www.harveybrough.com/. As a newly appointed Turner Sims Professor for 2012/13, he’ll be working with Keith Davis, the University of Southampton’s Head of Vocal Studies, and with Music lecturer Dr Ben Oliver to get the community choir going.
As recent TV programmes have highlighted, shared experience of singing in a choir can strengthen community spirit and improve personal wellbeing. It’s fun, above all: Harvey will make sure of that. He’ll create a repertoire when he knows what sorts of music you want to sing. Nothing is assumed at this stage.
NO AUDITION NECESSARY. You don’t have to be able to read music. You don’t have to be a “good” or experienced singer to take part. Harvey can unlock your voice however deeply it lies buried.
You do need to be able to attend two or more of the following sessions:
Wednesday 14 November
Wednesday 21 November
Wednesday 28 November
Wednesday 5 December
All between 1.10 and 1.50 pm, in Turner Sims (Highfield campus) – perfect for a Wednesday lunch break.
We hope to arrange a special Community Choir performance before or shortly after Christmas.
There’s no need to register in advance. Just turn up. But to give us some idea of numbers, emails signalling enthusiasm for the project would be helpful. Please send them to Victoria Hooper in Music: [email protected]
