It is the winter of 1912, war clouds gather across Europe. The most successful playwright of his generation is dead, Antoine de Saint Flour. Summoned to a remote castle in the Bavarian mountains, his wife, ex-wives, mistresses and friends meet for the reading of his will.
In confronting one another, they slowly become aware that they are seeing reflections of Antoine’s own fascinating and maddening personality. They begin to realise that they are taking part in a scene from one of Antoine’s own dramas, playing roles he has assigned to them even after his death.
Extremely witty and poignant by turns, this intriguing drama from one of France’s most prolific post-war writers is told partly in flashback – and features a play within a play. Dear Antoine… was first performed in the UK at the Chichester Festival and London’s Piccadilly Theatre in 1971.
