Transformism: Melanie Jackson and Revital Cohen, exhibition launch and symposium, Saturday 26 January, 12-4pm

We would be delighted if you can join us for the launch of Transformism, the latest exhibition at the John Hansard Gallery. All are welcome to attend from 12-4pm on 26 January and refreshments will be provided.

Transformism will be on show until 9 March. The symposium accompanying Transformism considers some of the ideas suggested by the artists’ works and explores how crafted life forms, create an interplay between art, design, science and technology.

The cultivation and crafting of biological life has existed for centuries, both for aesthetic and practical purposes. The symposium will begin to examine some of the implications of applying new scientific and technological tools to the manipulation of living forms and systems, what this means for our relationship with non-human life, and the new realm of aesthetic and forms it opens up.

Speakers:

Dr Susanne Kuechler – Head of Department in Anthropology at UCL, Director of Masters Programme in Culture, Materials and Design, Co-Editor of the Journal of Material Culture.

Dr Emma J Roe – Lecturer in Human Geography at the University of Southampton, specialising in bodily cultural geographies of human-nonhuman relations, embodied material ethics and practical experience of consumption.

Professor Raymond Oliver – Lecturer in Interactive Materials in the P³i – D:STEM Interaction Studio Lab at Northumbria University, specialising in synthetic biology, organic electronics and nano materials.

The private view is free, and the symposium is too, but you will need to book a place for the symposium. Please follow this link to book your place: www.eventbrite.com/event/4872159761?ref=ebtn#.

Transformism is commissioned by The Arts Catalyst and organised in partnership with the John Hansard Gallery. It is supported using public funding by Arts Council England.

Melanie Jackson’s commission has been supported by a Wellcome Trust Arts Award and the Slade School of Fine Art and Revital Cohen’s by S-Air Japan.
