Emphasis on our female contributions recognised, as six women are placed in the Woman’s Hour ‘Power List’

We place huge importance on gender equality at Southampton and celebrate the key contribution of women to the University and Science as a signatory of the Athena SWAN Charter. We have many women in UEG, (University Executive Group) and our Chair of Council is female, Dr Gill Rider, along with other prominent female members of Council.

Now, Professor Dame Wendy Hall and Dame Helen Alexander have been nationally recognised, as they head a list of luminaries from the University to be named as part of the BBC Radio 4 Woman’s Hour ‘Power List’.

Dame Wendy, Dean of Physical and Applied Sciences, and Dame Helen, the University’s Chancellor, are joined on the list by Southampton alumni Justine Greening MP, Secretary of State for International Development; Clare Foges, Speechwriter to the Prime Minister; and Rosemary Squire OBE, Joint Chief-Executive of the Ambassador Theatre Group; and honorary graduate Shami Chakrabarti, Director of the human rights organisation Liberty. We continue to recognise women at the University and the challenges that they face. As part of International Women’s Week, we will be hosting a week-long programme of activities – find out about the events here.
