How well is B37 doing to save energy?

Come along to B37 and take a look at the display screen in the atrium to see how well the building occupiers are doing to save energy. Every month the electricity used in the building will be updated to show how much has been used compared to the same month in the previous year. A red bar shows that more is being used, whilst a green bar shows less is being used. We value your feedback on the display so we can gauge whether the information is accessible and easy to understand. Please send your thoughts to [email protected]. We will be rolling out such display screen information across the estate in the coming months.

Staff switching non-essential equipment off, is an essential part of saving energy and carbon as was shown in last year’s Blackout event. Encouragingly the staff survey appeared to show 78 per cent of the 2,701 staff who responded, do switch off such equipment. Blackout 2013 on Friday 26 April will show us whether there has been an improvement compared to the 1,741 Pcs left switched on last year (out of a total of 5570). You can see how well your building did on the Blackout infographic (http://southampton.likn.co/susdev/our_students/blackout.html).

The University needs to reduce its carbon emissions from energy consumption by 20 per cent by 2020. The Carbon Management Plan ( http://southampton.likn.co/carbonmanagement/) shows how a mixture of technical fixes and behaviour changes are needed to help us move towards this target. The University has allocated £1M per annum for the next few years to fund carbon reduction initiatives. To date, 66 projects have been approved, costing £1.07M and which aim to reduce our carbon emissions by nearly 3,000 tonnes. This is a good start, but we know it will get harder to find savings as we work through the projects and as we open new buildings.

So, we still need your suggestions on ways we can save energy and costs. Please send your suggestions to  [email protected]
