Southampton hosts gender equality conference on campus

Today, Wednesday 20 March, the University welcomes some of the leading figures in the field of gender equality to a conference on creating sustainable change in gender equality in the higher education sector.

Keynote addresses will be delivered by Paul Walton (University of York) and Yvonne Galligan (Gender Initiative, Queen’s University Belfast) who have both been instrumental in driving forward gender equality in their respective roles.

Tessa Harrison, our own University Registrar, will chair the conference which is being hosted on Avenue Campus and Professor Jeremy Howells, Dean of Business and Law and the University’s Diversity Champion, will close the conference. Several more of our staff will participate in panel discussions and lead workshops during the course of the day, including Professor Hazel Biggs and Liz Williams (both Southampton Law School), Professor Diana Eccles (Medicine) and Dr Helen Czerski (ISVR).

The Athena SWAN Charter and its awards have gained a highly respected profile across the UK and beyond, but there is more to establishing sustainable improvements in gender equality than earning an award. This conference recognises Athena SWAN as a key vehicle for progressing gender equality and will explore how to embed change for the longer term and in those areas not currently covered by Athena SWAN.
