Sustainability Action seminar series begins with ‘Building support for sustainability across universities’

We are pleased to announce next week’s seminar on ‘Building support for sustainability across universities’, by Jane Davidson. This is the first event in the Sustainability Action seminar series.

Jane is Director of a new sustainability institute, INSPIRE, (Institute for Sustainability Practice, Innovation and Resource Effectiveness) at the University of Wales, Trinity Saint David, which is introducing sustainability content into every student’s experience. INSPIRE recently won the Guardian award for the best Higher Education sustainability initiative in the UK. Prior to her role at INSPIRE, Jane was Minister for Environment and Sustainability in Wales from 2007 – 2011 where she was responsible for the Welsh Government agreeing to make sustainable development its central organising principle, the introduction of the Welsh charge on carrier bags, the introduction of ‘One Planet Development’ into Welsh planning policy, the establishment of the Welsh Climate Change Commission and legislation on recycling.

In her previous role as Minister for Education and Lifelong Learning from 2000 – 2007, she pioneered a new Foundation Phase for three-seven year olds, the Welsh Baccalaureate and introduced Education for Sustainable Development and Global Citizenship (ESDGC) into the Welsh curriculum. Jane was the third most influential environmentalist in the UK for the Independent on Sunday in 2009 and has been Resource magazine’s no 1 and 2 in 2009 and 2010 for her work on waste which has seen Wales come from behind the rest of the UK to be the lead recycling country in the UK.
