The results of the Southampton Blackout are in!
Thanks to the amazing efforts of our staff and student volunteers, who gave up their Friday evening on 26 April to tour the University switching off electrical equipment to save energy, the energy consumption over the weekend was 2.17 per cent lower than on average, saving 1.2 tonnes of CO2.
If this happened every weekend over a year, we would save 331 tonnes of CO2 and over £78, 500 in energy bills, which is enough to power 238 households for a year.
Huge savings were made at Avenue Campus and the Winchester School of Art, where the amount of electricity consumed was reduced by 16 per cent and 10 per cent, respectively. The energy saved on Highfield campus was 1.68 per cent, which is lower than last year’s saving, proving that we are all becoming more energy conscious and switching off!
The message is clear. Switching off electrical equipment when it is not needed can make a huge difference to protect the environment and reduce CO2 emissions.
Join us in keeping up the momentum by making sure your electrical equipment is switched off this Friday for the Bank Holiday.
