The Curriculum Innovation team are delighted to report that 1,029 students have signed up to take one of the interdisciplinary modules next year. This demonstrates how keen many of our students are to broaden their educational experiences and develop new skills and knowledge for their future. Some of the modules will also be on offer to incoming first year students in September, so the final numbers are likely to rise again.
Some of the current cohort who are taking CI modules this year have shared their experiences and have been very positive about what they have learned and the impact this will have on their futures:
“Everyone is talking about China these days…. What is really happening? … Armed with this knowledge, my career options will definitely be wider.” Denny Boey, 3rd year Law, ‘Understanding Modern China’
“The opportunity of discussing and debating contemporary issues with students from different disciplines allowed me to develop interpersonal skills and helped me understand different perspectives” Mohamed Ibrahim, 3rd Year Geography, ‘Sustainability in the Local and Global Environment’
“This module has assisted me in my Dissertation and other coursework as I am learning to think about problems from different perspectives rather than just my own” Ellie Selwood, 3rd Year English, ‘Ethics in a Complex World’
Lecturers have also found the experience of developing a CI module worthwhile:
“The quality of the students’ work last semester was astoundingly good- the module allowed me to connect with really motivated students and it was very enjoyable to teach.” Dr Fraser Sturt, Senior Lecturer in Archaeology, ‘Living with Environmental Change’
“It has been a superb experience to find people from other Faculties and engage with them.” Dr James Dyke, Lecturer in ECS, ‘Global Challenges’
“Digital literacy is key to all aspects of university life and is a ‘hot topic’ at the moment. CI is an easier way to get something new and different off the ground, as you are part of something bigger.” Dr Lisa Harris, Senior Lecturer in Marketing, ‘Living and Working on the Web’
The CI team are always looking for more interdisciplinary modules to offer to our students, so if you’re inspired by the case-studies and would like to get involved, please contact [email protected]
