This week, the University hosted a two day meeting of the Council for the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research (EPSRC) and its associated committees.
ESPRC only visit a University every two years so it was an honour to be asked. A quarter of our research funding is awarded by EPSRC and includes seven EPSRC Programme Grants which have a collected value of £37m; the overall portfolio is worth £160m.
The visit was a great success, in which we hosted six EPSRC committee meetings and on both days gave the group tours around our campus which included presentations and the opportunity to review in more depth some of the research they have funded. They also attended an evening event hosted by William Powrie and Dame Wendy Hall.
David Delpy, Chief Executive, EPSRC said of the visit: “Council welcomed the opportunity to visit one of its major university partners. We were superbly hosted by Southampton staff, and Council members greatly valued the chance to see at first hand the excellent research undertaken on the back of our investment. Members also noted the exciting interactions between researchers and industry in much of the work on display, evidence that excellent research can have very real impact in people’s lives.”
