Improvements to our wind tunnel

The R J Mitchell Wind Tunnel has been a long standing benefit for the University and a facility we are proud of. Southampton was one of the first wind tunnels in the country to use a moving ground plane and this made us the world leader for motorsport aerodynamics.

This development is happening to improve the perception of the facility and promote the largest wind tunnel in the UK University sector.

In recent years the tunnel has been able to diversify and allow far more student testing, via both project work and research. More recent commercial work has included America’s Cup work, the British Cycling team, Amy Williams Bob Skeletontesting and Aston Martin. This work was recognised in 2012 with a Queen’s Anniversary Award for innovation and world-leading expertise in performance sports engineering. It has featured recently in ITV4’s coverage of the Tour de France.

The new extension has been designed to enhance the entrance for visitors and provide ‘airside’ access particularly during tours and outreach events.  The facility will also include new changing rooms for professional athletes using the tunnel when testing sports equipment.

Prof Simon Cox, Associate Dean for Enterprise in Engineering and the Environment, commented “this is an exciting investment in a world class facility that will benefit our students, research and commercial work.”

Works are due for completion during summer 2013.
